This week, we’re heading to the beautiful North Shore of PEI to visit Kevin MacNeill at Parkview Farms in Cavendish—a family-run operation steeped in history and heart.

Kevin has been dairy farming since the day he was born—almost 62 years ago—and still finds every day on the farm brings something new. “Some tasks I enjoy, some I just do,” he says, “but every day, month, season, and year brings new challenges—and I always look forward to what’s next.”

Kevin farms alongside his brother Garth, Garth’s son Spencer, and his own son Lance, when time permits. Together, they’re currently milking 52 cows in a unique hybrid setup: 12 tie-stalls with auto take-off milkers, a system that blends elements of a traditional tie-stall with the efficiency of a flat parlour.

After damage from Hurricane Fiona, the family rebuilt their barn with a Wolf structure, offering deep straw bedding, natural light, and excellent cross-breeze ventilation—ideal for happy, healthy cows.

What truly sets Parkview Farms apart? It’s been in operation on the same land since 1853. The MacNeill family first settled there in the early 1800s, and for over 90 years, they’ve welcomed guests to stay at their Tourist Home or one of 10 charming cottages, offering an authentic farm experience.

Kevin’s advice to anyone thinking of becoming a dairy farmer? “If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. It’s not for everyone, but the sense of accomplishment—from raising calves to growing crops and milking cows—is unmatched. You get to be a little bit of everything: a vet, mechanic, accountant, labourer, and businessperson.”
